Plenty of activities at public works open house

The City’s Engineering and Public Works Department is dedicated to keeping the City of Richmond one of the safest and most livable in the country.

Residents and visitors are invited to look at what keeps the city running smoothly at the annual Engineering and Public Works open house on Saturday, May 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City Operations Yard, 5599 Lynas Lane.

“The City’s engineering and public works team is committed to providing Richmond with sustainable infrastructure, environmental leadership and service excellence,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie in a news release.

“Their dedication is essential to the health, safety, mobility and quality of life for our community.”

There are many activities available for all ages. Experience the Quake Cottage mobile earthquake simulator and other interactive emergency, police and ambulance displays. Kids can play on heavy, real-life equipment and stick their hands in a Lafarge cement display. There will also be face-painting, a children’s play area, and live entertainment by The Big Head Project, Erzsi and the Urban Dance Company. In addition, there will be a Show and Shine classic car show sponsored by CUPE 394, gardening and lawn care information, and interactive environmental exhibits with conservation and sustainability tips.

The city is asking attendees to bring a reusable water bottle to refresh yourself with "some of Canada’s best drinking water from one of the many portable tap water stations."

Nine food vendors will be on site. Check the Richmond News or the city’s Facebook page for a meal coupon for children eight years old and under.

Once again, the free Works on Wheels interactive bus tour will be offered—showcasing some major engineering and public works projects.

Also, get a special look at the Alexandra District Energy Utility, Bath Slough drainage pump station and Fire Hall No. 3.

Space is limited. To secure a spot, please register at bustours@richmond.ca. Bus riders must be over 40 lbs.

As event parking is limited, walking, taking transit, carpooling or riding your bike is encouraged. Racks will be available to safely secure bikes throughout the event.

Richmond’s Engineering and Public Works open house coincides with the 56th annual National Public Works Week (May 15 to 21), which recognizes the men and women who provide and maintain the infrastructure services known as public works.
