The City of Richmond’s park department is nixing the idea of a Girl Guides campsite to replace the off-leash dog park at McDonald Beach Park.

Pooch lover Coun. Ken Johnston said he was relieved to see staff counter Coun. Harold Steves’ idea.

“This is a great place for socializing,” said Johnston.

Steves said nearby Iona Regional Park, operated by Metro Vancouver, is off-leash for dogs and McDonald could be spared of free-range mutts in exchange for greater programming at the beach.

Girl Guides presently stake a claim at Woodward Landing at Dyke and No. 5 roads.

A lack of camping infrastructure, airport noise and a fire ant problem were cited as reasons against a new campsite.

A regional plan called Experience the Fraser does call for camping on or near Sea Island over the long term planning for the region.
