Richmond RCMP are investigating a puzzling theft of flags that could leave the Bridgeport Royal Canadian Legion without colours for Remembrance Day ceremonies.

The theft was reported Friday night after Legion staff found a locked container outside the Legion had been broken into. Thieves stole bags containing 10 flags and 10 brass-coloured flag poles.

The Legion’s vice-president Bob Miller said Canadian flags, British Columbian flags, a Union Jack, City of Richmond and Bridgeport legion flags were missing.

“The members are devastated because they don’t know why anyone would take these flags,” Miller said in an interview Saturday. “They are unique to this Legion, so what use would they be to anyone else?”

Miller said it’s hoped someone will spot the stolen bags and return them to the Legion before Monday’s ceremonies.

Police have no suspects yet.

“I hope that out of respect for the significance these flags hold, someone will come forward with information about the flags so that we can get them back to the Legion,” Richmond RCMP Cpl Stephanie Ashton stated in a press release.

Anyone with information about the theft can call Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212.
