As costs of living in Metro Vancouver appear to be on the constant rise, finding ways to reduce energy and save on bills can make a difference to overall household expenses. From now until June 15, Richmond residents who replace their clothes washer with a high efficiency model can not only get a $100 rebate, but lower their energy costs in the future.

Clothes washers are the second highest water consumers for a typical home, following toilets, and use around 13 per cent of household water. Not only can a high-efficiency washer save on electricity, but it can save up to 64,000 litres of water.

Through a joint initiative between the City of Richmond and BC Hydro, those eligible for the rebate can purchase an approved clothes washer for a Richmond home before June 15. Qualifying appliances can be found at BC Hydro’s website.

After purchasing a new washer and sending in a receipt, BC Hydro will issue the rebate cheque.

Old clothes washers need to be disposed of properly and can be recycled at the Richmond Recycling Depot at 5555 Lynas Lane or through the city’s large item pick-up program.
