The Fraser Institute released its controversial rankings of B.C. and Yukon secondary schools, and New Westminster Secondary School ranked 73 out of 280.
The school scored a seven out of 10 for the 2010/11 school year, according to the report.
As is the standard most years, the top schools on the list are private schools, with Vancouver's York House topping the list - scoring 10 out of 10 - for the second year in a row. Vancouver's University Hill secondary is the highest-ranked public school on the list. At 15th, it scored 8.8 out of 10. The lowest-ranked schools on the list are George M. Dawson Secondary School in Masset on Haida Gwaii and Nisga'a secondary in New Aiyansh, both scoring zero.
The school ratings are based on seven indicators: graduation rate and delayed advancement rate; the average exam mark in Grade 10 to 12 courses that include a mandatory provincial exam; percentage of Grade 10 to 12 mandatory provincial examinations failed; the average difference by which the school mark exceeds the exam mark in the above-mentioned courses; differences between male and female students in their exam marks in English 10 and Math 10; graduation rate; and delayed advancement rate.
