World cup fever hit an all-time high Sunday morning in Steveston during the match up between Germany and England.
The game results saw proud Englishman Iain Mackelworth forced to don a Lederhosen and do a little jig waving the German flag in the middle of the No. 1 Road and Moncton Street intersection.
It all began a couple of weeks back when Mackelworth, owner of the Steveston Barbers, laid a bet with his Iranian-born German rival Davood Khatami, who owns the Bean and Beyond Café, around the corner, about who would win the world cup game.
The loser would have to wear the other team’s garb in public.
Had England won, Khatami would have been forced to sport a little Speedo and trot down Moncton Street waving England’s flag.
Khatami and Mackelworth kicked the day off in style, with opposing breakfasts from either country taking centre stage in Bean and Beyond at 6 a.m. By 6:30 the café was almost full with eager soccer fans ready to not only watch the game, but bare witness to the public humiliation of one shop owner of another.
