Richmond students will shine a light on Canada’s fascinating history at the Richmond Museum’s annual Richmond Regional Heritage Fair on Saturday, May 13.

This free, community-based event celebrates the city’s next generation of leaders and takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Richmond Cultural Centre.

View projects created by Richmond elementary and secondary school students that stir curiosity about Canada’s diverse history and heritage from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Or, explore topics that range from prominent Canadians such as Viola Desmond, to significant events such as the Gold Rush and historic places such as Vancouver’s Chinatown.

Visitors can also take part in free, family-friendly activities — play a Richmond-themed Family Feud trivia game, make a wooden, model airplane, compete in a canning challenge and more.

The day concludes with a closing ceremony in the Performance Hall of the Cultural Centre from 2 to 3 p.m., where students will receive awards for outstanding Heritage Fair projects.

Five students will be selected to represent Richmond and present their projects at the BC Provincial Heritage Fair in Victoria, BC, July 5 to 9.

The local schools participating in this year’s Heritage Fair are Anderson Elementary, Byng Elementary, Cornerstone Christian Academy, Diefenbaker Elementary, Gilmore Elementary, McNeely Elementary, McRoberts Secondary, Mitchell Elementary, Westwind Elementary, Whiteside Elementary and Wowk Elementary.

The Richmond Regional Heritage Fair is sponsored by the Richmond Museum Society, BC Heritage Fairs Society, Richmond School District, Richmond Heritage Commission, Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, and the BC Arts Council.

The Heritage Fair program is a bilingual, educational initiative that aims to encourage students to explore Canadian history and heritage in a dynamic, hands-on learning environment.

Each year, thousands of students participate in Heritage Fairs across the country.
