Your voice: What should city council do with Onni Group’s $5.5 million rezoning payment?

Money earmarked for extra amenity for Steveston's public realm

We asked Steveston residents how a $5.5 million community amenity contribution should be used to benefit Steveston's public realm.

Well, the library upgrade for sure. People use it a lot. It is too small, absolutely. I don’t know whether it should go in here or over there. Oh gosh, $5.5 million, that’s a lot, although a million is nothing.

Ron Small – retired businessman

It’s a difficult thing. $5.5 million is a considerable amount; it will go a long way. Although this gets into the commercial aspect I’m thinking improvements to restaurants, especially closer to the water. If they could redesignate (improve) some of that waterfront land for the restaurant situation.

Warren McKenzie – retired social worker

As an avid boater, I would like more marina space, more available moorage for local boaters. I end up parking in Ladner or the Middle Arm and that’s irritating. There’s a lot of fishing type boats and there’s a long wait for non-fishing type boats to get space in the harbor.

Donna Danyluk – youth worker

I thought the $5.5 million was going into the community centre. I think they need to remodel it and put in some subsidized housing. They need to build up like everyone else is. A lot of seniors I know are moving out and having to go to White Rock and stuff like that. They’re losing their community.

Bonnie Oliver – retired school counsellor

I know what it shouldn’t be used for: that tramline they are thinking about going in, from here to the Cannery. …I would rather see the money go towards an improved community centre and/or library.
