Learn how hands-on education prepares your child for future success. Get tips on how to help your son or daughter make the best decisions for their education. And hear from KPU alumni, faculty members and career services. The event includes an introduction to KPU and the opportunity to KPU compare it to other post-secondary institutions in the lower mainland. Plus, there will be a campus with a faculty member. The Richmond Carvers Society’s Carving Show offers a chance to see some skills in action May 28 (noon – 5 p.m.) and 29 (1o a.m. – 4 p.m.) at the Steveston Community Centre (4111 Moncton Street). Among those showing their work will be Rupert Scow, a member of the Kwikawsupaineuk Nation, and well known carver. There will also be a raffle with more than 50 items from companies such as Helvie Knives, Flexcut, Foredom, Fox Chapel Publishing, Nicholas Woodcarvings, Saburrtooth Tools, Blue Ribbon Carving Supplies and Phoenix Art Workshop.

Looking for that special something? The Steveston United Church’s plant, bake and garage sale on May 28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. may just have it. Steveston United Church is located at 3720 Broadway Street.

The 11th Annual Peoples Drug Mart Walk for ALS gets going at 9 a.m. on May 28 at Garry Point Park. The event, which supports the ALS Society of BCto fund research and to provide support for those living with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), features a 5 km walk beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Beautiful orchids will be on display at the Richmond Nature Park (11851 Westminster Hwy.) during the Richmond Orchid Show May 28 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. View different varieties of orchids up close and learn how to care for these unique plants from members of the Richmond Orchid Club. Slug lovers unite! The Richmond Nature Park (1185 Westminster Hwy.) is the place to be for all those who have, or want to gain an appreciation for, these slimy, yet fascinating creatures on  May 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. The free, family event features competitions including the heaviest, smallest and slimiest mollusk along with Cecil, the giant slug, judging this year’s Most Beautiful Slug contest. The event culminates with the Great Richmond Slug Race, which always attracts a hysterical crowd cheering on their favourite slimy specimen through the finish line. Help support SOS Children's Village B.C. at the SOS Children's Village BC Run & Walk from 8:30 a.m. p 12 p.m. on May 29 at the Richmond Oval. Collect pledges and participate in the 2K, 5K or 10K Walk/Run to help make a difference for more than 9,000 B.C. children and youth in foster care. Experience a journey through old world beauty, brutality, love, betrayal and death in Opera Opulenza’s Cavalleria Rusticana on June 1, the last of three events in the Minoru Chapel Opera Spring 2016 season. Composer Pietro Mascagni was just 27 when he wrote the opera in 1889 over an eight-day period. The work broke new ground and ushered in the era of verismo. The Minoru Chapel Opera series is performed at 6540 Gilbert Road, Richmond (beside the Gateway Theatre). Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 604-276-4300 (quote course #1362308 for 2:00 p.m. show, #1362358 for 7:00 p.m. show). Admission is $20 for adults and $18 for students/seniors. Doors open 30 minutes prior to show time.

Richmond residents are invited to connect with their community during BC Seniors Week June 6 to 10 through a series of fun, entertaining and educational activities that will help show persons 55 years and older how to connect with new people.A free opening ceremony will kick things off June 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Minoru Place Activity Centre with a country fair-inspired social, featuring live music by the Soda Crackers, dancing and strawberry shortcake. Other activities to enjoy throughout the week include Art in the Park at Thompson Community Centre, a Connect with Social Media workshop at the Richmond Media Lab, a Wellness Showcase at the East Richmond Community Hall, dance classes, free tours and Our Community Fair at City Centre Community Centre. There will also an introduction to the Music Works pilot project being offered to isolated, frail and at risk seniors at West Richmond Community Centre. The week will wrap up on Friday, June 10 with a dance variety class and seniors luncheon at Hamilton Community Centre. Pre-registration is required for most activities as space is limited. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site’s (12138 Fourth Avenue) feature exhibit, "Women on the Homefront" explores the fascinating contributions made by women toward the Second World War effort, with a particular focus on the impact of their work in Canada’s west coast canneries and in their homes. On display until March 31, visitors can wander through the different “vignettes” of life at home and work during the war years. Reminisce, share or listen to the stories of this important part of Canadian history. Regular admission prices apply.

The Pacific Woodworkers Guild members meet on the third Tuesday of the month (except July and August). The guild’s goal is to impart basic woodworking skills & knowledge to those who show an interest and desires for woodworking. New members and guest are always welcome. Members meet at 11060 No. 2Rd. Richmond, BC. Come and watch the presentations, get involved in the discussion and enjoy the refreshments. The guild will be introducing their new PWG 101 Woodworking classes this spring.
