Fourteen students at Richmond secondary's Recycling Club and the Power of 1 Baking Club presented a cheque for $700 to Jessica Casey.
Casey came all the way from Africa as a representative from Tekera community in Uganda, to receive the donation.
The money will be used to put six students through school for a full year, including uniforms and supplies, to purchase PE and music equipment, and to support a new program at Tekera for students with disabilities.
The students worked diligently for several months collecting and sorting thousands of recycled cans in the school. Students from the P1 Baking Club rolled up their sleeves and baked every day for months and gave up their lunch breaks to sell their baking at $1 a plate.
On May 3, at the Gateway Theatre the students were awarded the Richmond Outstanding Community Youth Award in the group division for their work.
These students have been dedicated to raising money for local school initiatives, local food banks, World Vision, Operation Smile and, recently, educational and community projects focusing on children in Uganda.
