Two of Richmond’s finest army cadets from the 2947 “39 Service Battalion” have been presented with top national honours.

Chief Warrant Officer Alex Nguyen - who is Regimental Sgt. Major at the battalion based on No. 4 Road at Alderbridge Way - was named “Top Army Cadet” in Canada, out of all army cadets affiliated with the Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers.

The award was presented by Major Martin Hart, of the 39 Canadian Brigade Group.

Over the last few weeks, Nguyen underwent extensive assessment and interviews at Vernon Cadet Training Centre and was selected as the Company Sergeant Major for Alpha Company.

This is one of the most senior roles in Western Canada, and has direct supervision and leadership of more than 200 cadets enrolled in music and drill courses.

Master Warrant Officer Joyce Li also received similar honours earlier this year. She was named the “Top Army Cadet” in B.C. by the Army Cadet League of Canada (B.C. branch), and will be officially presented with her award in October.

In recognition of her outstanding performance, leadership, and commitment to the Army Cadet Program, Li was selected to attend the prestigious Maple Leaf Exchange in the U.K.

This opportunity is only available to a small group of 30 elite cadets from across Canada.

Li will commence her adventure with one week of ramp-up training in Ottawa before departing for the U.K., where she will undergo training alongside the British Army Cadet Force.

Nguyen is the third cadet from 2947 to hold the mantle of Company Sergeant Major in Vernon in as many years.

Likewise, Li is the third cadet in three consecutive years to have been selected to attend the Maple Leaf Exchange.

2947 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps is a non-profit youth organization supported by the federal government and the Army Cadet League of Canada.

The program is free to all youth ages 12-18, there are no registration or administration fees required. For more information, visit 2947ArmyCadets.ca or contact Communications@2947ArmyCadets.ca.
