Dodgeball has changed markedly over the last few years, according to organizers of the Richmond Dodgeball League

Richmond Dodgeball League is hosting a “newbie” drop-in session tonight at Garden City elementary from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The session is intended for novice dodgeball players or anyone who is curious about the sport.

“Once you try it out, you’ll likely agree that there’s something about throwing a dodgeball that’s very satisfying,” said Valerie Siu, Richmond Dodgeball League (RDL) co-executive director.

“Some may even say it helps relieve their daily stresses!”

The RDL was founded by Siu and Kevin Wu in April 2014. It began as a series of drop-in sessions and has now grown into a league of more than 200 players.

The league now hosts regular league nights, drop-in sessions, tournaments and social nights.

“RDL is a non-profit organization that thrives on our amiable community and is powered by a pod of volunteers that strive to ensure the best player experience,” said Siu, in an email.

Anyone over the age of 19 can join RDL; the next season starts in September and the league meets regularly on Monday nights.

“Dodgeball, as we know it today, is nothing like what we used to play in elementary school,” Siu added.

Siu wants the public to know that dodgeball is now a more structural and competitive game while still “maintaining a fun and safe environment.”
