It will be a choral celebration at Richmond Emmanuel Church for students and alumni of Hong Kong’s St. Stephen’s College.

A college choir from St. Stephen’s (SSC) will stop by Richmond on July 15, during a 10-day tour of the West Coast to meet with and perform for alumni from their Hong Kong college, who are now living in the Vancouver area.

“The choir will act as an ambassador for the college and will visit alumni of the SSC in the Bay Area and Vancouver, giving them an update about what current SSC student life is like,” said an organiser in a press release.

“Meanwhile, students will get a more in depth experience of American culture.”

According to Ping Wong, a former visual arts teacher of SSC who is now a Richmond resident, more than 100 alumni of different ages are expected to show up.

“This is great, it will be a lot of fun, a lot of chatting about the old days in Hong Kong; old days are cool,” said Wong.

He said alumni mostly range from those who graduated in the 1960s to the 1990s, with the eldest graduating in 1948.

“We have been gathering once a year in the last 10 years. Alumni from across North America will try to come, get a dinner, and do some activities, such as a local tour,” said Wong.

“The students and alumni have a very strong sense of belonging to the school and are proud to be SSCers. It’s a long-history Christian school, founded in 1903 and our slogan is ‘all rounded education.’”

The school choir was founded in 1975 and has won numerous awards in Hong Kong and worldwide. As well as traditional choral singing, the choir explores a cappella singing.

The choir will compete at the Golden Gate International Choral Festival in San Francisco prior to coming to Vancouver.

Public are welcome to attend the free concert at 6:30 p.m. on July 15 at 7451 Elmbridge Way. For more information, contact a3c@telus.net.
