German-style street party hits Steveston

Part of No. 1 Road in the village will be shut off to traffic this Saturday to make way for OktoberfeSteveston

Get your lederhosen and beer steins ready; this Saturday a small part of Steveston Village will be transformed into an Oktoberfest-style street party.

A 100 yard or so stretch of No. 1 Road — south of Moncton Street — will become a pedestrian-only zone from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 in order for the first ever OktoberfeSteveston to take place.

The free party itself kicks off at 10 a.m. with live DJs, a Mercedes-Benz car show — with some of the newest models, including one that isn’t even in the showrooms yet — face-painting, German sausage BBQ and a photo booth.

The Rick Hansen Foundation will also be on site, along with the Richmond Sockeyes mascot and a company called Renov8t will be putting on kids crafts.

German beer will, of course, be served in and behind the nearby Steveston Seafood House.

“It’s full steam ahead,” said one of the event’s organizers, Davood Khatami.

“Although the street is being shut down, it will be business as usual for all the merchants in there.

“There’s going to be dancing in the street, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Khatami, who runs Davood’s Bistro on No. 1 Road near Moncton Street, said OktoberfeSteveston wasn’t easy to bring together, but he’s confident it’s going to be worth the effort.

“There was lots of organization with the city, who have helped us a lot, I have to say,” said Khatami.

“On a busy day in Steveston, we get a few thousand people in the village and we’re hoping for even more to come out and support this.

“We want it to go as smoothly as possible so we can do this again. So many people have been talking about this, so we have our hopes.”

OktoberfeSteveston was crafted by Khatami and Dominque Jarry, of Sugar Art, both of whom were part of the group that organized Steveston World Cup Village in 2014.
