The first official community event for the Richmond Jets Minor Hockey Association is sure to create a buzz.

Parents and players will gather Saturday, June 23, at Steveston Barbers and Shay’s Hair Studio in Steveston at 3:45 p.m. for a head shaving event to raise money for cancer-related causes at B.C. Children’s Hospital.

“While our boys/girls are healthy enough to still play hockey and sometimes worry about not making it to a Banner game, other unfortunate kids at the BC Children Hospital, sometimes worry about their next Chemo Therapy appointment,” said Cody Kusch, an event organizer and past executive of Seafair.

Over the past six years the Seafair-led initiative raised $75,000 in donations as over 100 children shaved their heads.

“We only have One Children's Hospital in BC so our kids have likely benefited their service at one point in their lives,” noted Kusch, who is hoping to raise $25,000.

This spring, Seafair Minor Hockey Association (Islanders) and Richmond Minor Hockey Association (Blues) merged to become one minor hockey association.

Before officially merging the associations gathered in April to pay tribute to the Humboldt Broncos
