Driving your black Mini Cooper through the front doors of your high school and parking it in the main lounge for the day - ah, the memories.
That bizarre school prank and more is highly likely to be the topic of conversation at the Richmond High class of ‘78’s 40th reunion next month at Country Meadows Golf Club.
The class of 1978 meets up for the sixth time since graduating and one of the organizing committee – Angela Chen – is looking forward once again to reliving some good times at what is now called Richmond Secondary.
“One of our classmates drove his black Mini into the school and simply parked it in the lounge,” said Chen who, instead of walking two miles to school, quickly passed her driver’s test and drove there instead.
“I think it was there for the whole day. The doors were big enough, as were the halls. I can’t recall if he got punished or not, but I remember his name being Paul Kraeutner.”
Chen said the grad year has met on its five, 10, 20, 25 and 30-year anniversaries.
“At the 20-year one, we had more than 300 people attend at the old Delta River Inn on St. Edward’s Drive, I think it’s now one of the Sandman hotels,” added Chen, who still lives in Richmond.
“We’ve got around 100 people confirmed so far for the 40th, but we’re hoping for some more; there is a lot of people we’ve not been able to get hold of.”
There were over 500 in the graduating class of ’78 and Chen and the committee have managed to contact more than 300.
“Sadly, some are no longer with us,” she said. “We will light a burgundy candle in their memory.”
The 40th Class Reunion Cocktail Party will be held on Saturday, June 23 at Country Meadows from 6 p.m. to midnight.
