Greg Buss, long-serving chief librarian at Richmond Public Library, is retiring.

After 26 years at the helm and 33 years at the library, Buss officially retires today (Jan. 20).

During his time as chief librarian, he helped the library to achieve international recognition in many areas, including customer service, innovative building design, multilingual services, merchandising and information technology.

Buss began at Richmond Public Library in 1983 and is the library’s second chief librarian. During this time, he has seen many significant changes take place.

Among them are: the main library has been expanded and renovated; Steveston, Ironwood and Cambie branches have opened; computer catalogues and automation were adopted; new services such as computer labs, websites, and wireless connections were introduced; and new formats were adopted starting with VHS and CDs, DVDs and now a whole range of digital products. In all of these developments, Richmond Public Library was seen as an innovator and was recognized for its leadership throughout the library community.
