While there may not be support at city hall for a new bridge to replace the Massey Tunnel, a majority of Richmond Chamber of Commerce members have given it their OK.
The result comes from a recent survey that showed 87 per cent were in favour of the B.C. government’s proposal to spend $3.5 billion on a 10-lane span. Business owners were also asked if they, their employees, customers and/or suppliers rely on the corridor. Only five per cent of respondents’ businesses were unaffected. A common theme to the comments from those surveyed was a desire to see the alleviation of congestion between Richmond and Delta, tempered by concern for proposed tolling.
“Ultimately, we believe that the long-term economic and social advantages of this project are vital to Richmond,” said chamber chair Rob Akimow.
He added, the chamber also “encourages” the federal government to help fund the project, which will aid the flow of people and goods between YVR, the US border and Port Metro Vancouver
