One hundred free tickets are being offered for an upcoming orchestral evening, led by student musicians, and in aid of the Richmond Food Bank.

The Music Encore Concert Society is teaming up with the Steveston-based World of Music and Arts to promote classical music for kids and youth and raise funds and food donations for the food bank.

They are hosting "Blossoming Harmonies" at Gateway Theatre - with talented children from World of Music playing with a professional orchestra - and are releasing 100 free tickets to those who drop off food and/or monetary donations before the June 3 event.

“Last year, the society hosted a similar, but smaller, event at Gateway, but it was so successful that the students wanted to do it again,” said Anna Vavilova, World of Music and Arts director.

“This time, they wanted a charitable side to it, so we’ve decided to make 100 of the 500 tickets free, in return for a donation to the food bank.”

If there is overwhelming demand to give donations, Vavilova said they may consider offering more free tickets.

“Blossoming Harmonies” is being billed as an “Orchestral Concertos Evening” including a “gala performance of 14 outstanding young pianists and vocalists” age eight to 18 with the symphony orchestra performing piano concertos and vocal miniatures by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, Rachmaninov, Strauss and Rowley.

Donations can be dropped off at World of Music, unit 120, 6160 London Road, Monday to Friday, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Call 778 297 5505 for more information.

The concert takes place Sunday, June 3 at 7 p.m. at Gateway Theatre,

6500 Gilbert Rd.
