Lots of activities in store during Youth Week, May 1-7

Starting May 1, Youth Week celebrates seven days of awesome activities for teens in Richmond

Richmond’s teens can enjoy an entire week of fun, engaging and interactive events around the city from Sunda (May 1) through next Saturday (May 7).

The City of Richmond and its community association partners are hosting more than a dozen events for youth ages 13-18 across Richmond, from Steveston to Hamilton and various locations in between.

“Richmond’s diverse youth are vital to making our community more engaged and livable,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie in a press release. “We are proud to offer a variety of Youth Week events that celebrate youth and provide opportunities to showcase their creativity, offer meaningful experiences and support positive peer connections.”

The week begins with Richmond’s talented young performers at Andanté Café Youth Showcase at City Centre and wraps up with a teen swim at Watermania

The following are this year’s top seven things (by date):

1. Sunday, May 1 – City Centre Andanté Café Youth Showcase,  6 - 8 p.m,  City Centre Community Centre (5900 Minoru Blvd.).

Watch some of Richmond’s amazing youth talent, singers, musicians, poets, performers and comedians in a relaxed café-like setting.

2. Monday, May 2 – City of Richmond U-Roc Youth Awards, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Gateway Theatre (6500 Gilbert Rd.).

Presented by Kwantlen Polytechnic University, this awards ceremony celebrates the achievements and dedication of Richmond’s Outstanding Youth and Asset Champions. This event is by invitation only.

3. Tuesday, May 3 – Boot Camp and BBQ, 3:30-5 p.m. at Thompson Community Centre (5151 Granville Ave.).

4. Thursday, May 5 – City of Richmond Pechakucha Vol. 15-RichCity Life, 8 - 9 p.m., Steveston Community Centre (4111 Moncton Street).

Watch youth present 20 images in 20 seconds each, igniting passion and creative thinking about the urban youth experience in Richmond. This event is presented by the City’s Public Art Program and Youth Services.

5. Friday, May 6 – Bubble Soccer, 4-6 p.m., West Richmond Community Centre (9180 No. 1 Rd.).

Join this action-packed modified version of soccer that includes playing five on five all while enclosed in a personal, plastic bubble that is both safe and fun. To register, call 604-238-8416 or visit www.richmond.ca/register and quote barcode #1514068.

6. Friday, May 6 – Mega Youth Night, 8-11 p.m., City Centre Community Centre.

Try activities such as pool, air hockey, glow-in-the-dark capture the flag/dodge ball, Karaoke and more. 

7. Saturday, May 7 – RYMP Presents Circuit Bending. 12-4 p.m., Richmond Media Lab (Richmond Cultural Centre, 7700 Minoru Gate).
