Culture Days, the annual free celebration of Canadian culture, will return to Richmond this fall with more than 80 hands-on activities and behind-the-scenes experiences.
Richmond artists, organizations and community groups open their doors for three full days — Friday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2 — for people to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, creative businesses and designers living and working in their community.
For months, members of Richmond’s cultural community have been planning a variety of demonstrations, tours, workshops and other special events.
The Richmond Cultural Centre will be the hub of the weekend’s festivities with many more activities taking place throughout the city.
Culture Days visitors can expect a wide range of things to do in Richmond, including:
Leave Your Mark FM – Pop-Up Radio Station: For this weekend only, a pop-up radio station will animate the Richmond Cultural Centre Plaza. The short range broadcast will feature music selected by local Richmond youth, live interviews with artists and readings of historical letters from the Richmond Museum. Tune in Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.;
Meet award-winning writer, Karen X. Tulchinsky: Kick off Richmond’s 2016 Writer-in-Residence at the free, public program launch on Friday Sept. 30 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Richmond Cultural Centre’s performance hall. Enjoy short readings, hear about her writing career and learn about the range of free public programs and mentorship opportunities she will present during her two-month residency at the Richmond Public Library, Richmond Media Lab and Minoru Place;
Family Drum Circle: Have fun playing African djembes and other percussion instruments in a family-friendly drum circle on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
Cultural Legends of the Sea and Richmond Carvers at Britannia Shipyards: Ignite your imagination by helping to decorate a main sail in an interactive and engaging community art project from Friday to Sunday, Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. While you are exploring historic Britannia Shipyards, drop in and meet the carvers on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
